Fredonia honors 80th anniversary of the end of World War II
A SPECIAL WREATH was placed at Veterans Park in Fredonia on Monday to honor veterans who landed and fought at Omaha, Utah and Iwo Jima Red beaches during World War II. It was 80 years ago that World War II ended after six bloody years of battle, and the Warren Kane American Legion Post 410 doesn’t want anyone to forget the sacrifices of American soldiers overseas.
On Monday, a permanent plaque honoring those who served at Omaha, Utah and Iwo Jima Red beaches was placed in Veterans Park, along with vials of sand from each beach to be buried under the plaque.
Jeff Kurz and Lynne Mueller, children of the late World War II veteran Harvey Kurz, who witnessed the famous raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima, helped place the wreath.
“The buddies who never made it home we honor and remember past and present, all those buddies. Today we honor and remember them,” Post Commander Rick Nelson said of American soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
