Fish Day won: Port’s Koebel takes gold in hometown 5K

The race is in their hometown in honor of their city, and the Port Washington High School boys’ cross country team represented at the 40th annual Portal Fish Day Run on Saturday.

Senior Jameson Koebel won the overall 5-kilometer race along the lakefront in 16 minutes, 11.9 seconds. Recent grad Alex Anewenter, who is going to run for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was third in 16:44.16 and Port senior John Dohrwardt was fourth in 17:55.44.

They are three members of last season’s team that qualified for the Division 1 state meet.

“I’m very excited about where Jameson is at right now. That is equal to Alex’s time from last year,” Port boys’ cross country coach Mark Pasten said. “Alex was just using the race as a training run this year. He was going to pace Jameson, but he was not feeling well so he dropped off the pace. John had a solid race and is looking stronger than last year.”

Pasten won the 50-to-59 age bracket by finishing in 20:18.23.

Ben Orvold, 36, of Sussex was second overall in 16:20.61.

Hope Orvold, 36, of Sussex, won the women’s race in 18:54.82. Former Grafton cross country runner Brooklyn Echeverria, 19, was second in 19:59.23.

A total of 322 runners and walkers participated in the event.

The run/walk/roll serves as a fundraiser for Portal Inc., a nonprofit agency in Grafton that serves adults and youths with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

The event drew runners from 13 different states and the District of Columbia.
