The Belgium Fire Department has about half of its raffle tickets sold toward the purchase of 21 new self-contained breathing apparatuses.

The SCBAs, slated to be purchased from MSA Safety Inc., cost about $7,000 each and each pack needs a spare bottle, Fire Chief Dan Birenbaum said.

Most of the departments in Ozaukee County uses MSA SCBAs, making them interchangeable, Birenbaum said.

The total purchase is about $180,000. The village and town of Belgium are splitting a portion of the cost, and the Fire Department is raising $60,000 on its own.

That’s where the raffle tickets come in. The fundraiser was launched in June with households receiving flyers.

The department, Birenbaum told the Town Board on Monday, is about halfway to its goal.

The new SCBAs will replace the department’s 2002 models.

“The problem is we can’t get parts for them anymore,” Birenbaum said.

The last time the department bought SCBAs it used a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The department is still trying to apply for another grant.

The lead time on getting the new SCBAs is anywhere from four weeks to three months.

Raffle tickets are $25 each with prizes totaling $27,350. The grand prize is $7,500 and second prize is $2,500. The smallest prize is $50. There is a one in 10 chance of winning a prize.

Tickets are available at Belgium Village Hall, Port Washington State Bank and from any fire department member.

The drawing is March 26 at the fire house and will be broadcast on Facebook.
