Fence is up; blockade must come down on Mill Street

A fence has been “forcibly” put up surrounding the embattled Waubeka Mill in the Town of Fredonia, Town Clerk Christophe Jenkins said.

The next step to open one lane of Mill Street is for Ozaukee County to take out its blockades that were preventing drivers from traveling on the road next to the mill.

“The county should be removing those soon so one lane of traffic can get through,” Jenkins said.

Charles Sheridan, whose son the Mill on Mill Street, was ordered by the town to put a chain-link fence around the building in order to open one lane of the road. He instead agreed to have the town do it and bill him.

The town hired United Rental to do the job for $2,000 to $3,000. The county permit for the fence is good for six weeks.

Sheridan in spring had started the process to clear debris from the collapsed west side of the mill. 

Sheridan is only allowed to spend 50% of the structure’s value in repairs, county Sanitation and Zoning Specialist Barry Sullivan said. The fair market value of the building was last assessed at $2,540, so he can only complete $1,270 in repairs. If he wants to spend more, he would need a building code variance, which would require a public hearing by the County Board of Adjustment.
