Exhibit focuses on refugee-made banners

The new exhibit at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilting and Fiber Arts in Cedarburg, “25 Million Stitches: One Stitch, One Refugee,” will run through July 28.

A tour of the exhibit will be led by guest curator and organizer Jennifer Kim Sohn from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9.

A celebration of the exhibit will follow the tour.

The exhibit is an artistic statement from the international community about human displacement, immigration and solidarity. The 25 million hand-sewn stitches each represent a single displaced human as counted in the United Nation’s High Commissioner on Refugees 2019 report. The stitches are part of 407 muslin banners, each 14 feet long. Creating the banners required participation from 2,300 stitchers from 37 countries and every state in the U.S.

“25 Million Stitches” was initiated and conceived in May 2019 by Sohn, a multimedia artist and activist in Sacramento, Calif., to create a community of art activists to visually document the enormity of the number of refugees in the world and to sustain the concern for the refugees in the minds of global citizens.

The museum at N50 W5050 Portland Rd. is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The museum will be closed Friday, March 8.
