Embroidery artist is featured at center

Embroidery artist Allison Miller is the December artist-in-residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

  Miller has a background in illustration and fine arts and works to bridge the gap between embroidery, painting and fine art.

She studied at Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw Community College’s arts program and began her work in illustration. She has taught embroidery workshops for the past five years and has had work displayed in Michigan, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

Her artwork is intended to capture snapshots of everyday life melded with the fantastical. She has always been interested in the surreal and how something out of place can make people feel profoundly uncomfortable, as though they have stepped into a new whimsical world.

Miller’s ultimate goal as an artist is to provoke a smile from the observer and create something that provides universal feelings of joy and warmth.

Miller will demonstrate her artwork from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, Dec. 8, 15 and 29.

Miller will teach a beginning cross stitch class from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13. 

Students will learn how to easily read cross stitch charts, how to separate embroidery floss and what needles to use for the best success. They will learn basic cross stitch and back stitch and how to back piece with felt using running and blanket stitches.

The skills taught in the class are easily expanded upon to create more advanced works. The fee is $45 for center members and $54 for nonmembers, and a $10 supply fee payable to Miller is due at the beginning of the class.
