Elizabeth P. Schaefer

    Elizabeth “ Liz”  Schaefer of Port Washington passed away at Lawlis Family Hospice Center in Mequon early Sunday morning, Jan. 12, 2020. She was 89 years old.  
    Elizabeth was born on March 5, 1930, in Newport, R.I., the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth Oxx Probert.  
    She attended local schools, graduating from Rogers High School in Newport before attending a nursing program.  
    On June 1, 1949, Liz was united in marriage with Robert Schaefer in Newport.  The couple settled in Sheboygan, where they started their family. They later moved to Milwaukee and Ixonia. Robert preceded Liz in death in 1993. Liz later moved to Port Washington.
    Mrs. Schaefer was a “professional volunteer,” being a founding member of Interfaith Caregivers, volunteering at Heritage Nursing Home, the Food Pantry and at the meal site at Maple Crest Apartments. In 1996, she was the Volunteer of the Year for Interfaith Caregivers.
    She was a member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church in Port Washington and the Port Washington Senior Center.  Liz enjoyed book club, bridge club, and playing rummy, cribbage, bocce ball and shuffleboard. She liked traveling to places such as Hawaii, Scotland, California and North Carolina.
    Liz is survived by her three children, Susan (Bruce) Janson of Raleigh, N.C., Les (Sarah) Schaefer of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Linda (Walter) Schiessl of Navarre, Fla.  
    She is also survived by six grandchildren, Jennifer (JonPaul) Balliet, Brian (Lynn) Janson, Steven Janson, Lauren (Peter) McIlwaine, Chloe and Megan Schaefer;  and five great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Camryn, Robert, Taylor and Calum.
    Liz is further survived by son-in-law Richard (Linda) White of  Port Charlotte, Fla.; and other family and friends.
    Liz was preceded in death by her husband Robert, daughter Janet White, and brothers Harry and Richard.
    A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, 505 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington.  
    Pastor Kelly Nieman-Anderson will preside.  
    The family will receive visitors at church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the service.  
    Liz will be laid to rest beside her husband in Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown at a later date.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to United Way of Northern Ozaukee, P.O. Box 39, Port Washington, WI 53074, to help people with transportation needs.
    Eernisse Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
