Easter baby born in Saukville grocery store parking lot
There was a special delivery at Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly on Sunday, but it wasn’t a basket of brightly colored Easter eggs.
A 30-year-old Port Washington woman delivered a baby girl in the parking lot of the Saukville grocery store, Saukville Fire Chief Bill Rice said.
The department was dispatched about 3:55 p.m., arriving at the parking lot minutes later to find the mother had just delivered the baby, Rice said, adding he believes the family was on its way to the hospital.
The crew checked out the mother and child, then transported them to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, he said.
“Mother and baby were both in good condition,” Rice said.
Police were also dispatched to the scene, but Chief Robert Meyer said they arrived just after the ambulance.
“We let them handle it,” he said. “I think we supplied a blanket for the mother.”
The birth, Rice said, was a nice way for crews to celebrate the holiday.
“I’m sure everybody felt good after this,” he said.
While calls like this are not run of the mill, Rice said they are becoming more common — at least in the Saukville area.
The department has responded to three calls in the last year or so of mothers in labor where the child was delivered just before crews arrived or were delivered by the ambulance crew, he said.
