With many other leisure activities shut down or scaled back due to concerns over the coronavirus, the Ozaukee County-run golf courses enjoyed one of their best Junes ever, officials said.

“The month of June was a great month for us,” county Planning and Parks Director Andrew Struck told the Natural Resources Committee recently.

Although final numbers aren’t in, “We had the best month of June ever for play and revenue,” he added.

The success allowed the county to catch up on its projected budget goal after April and May were largely lost to Covid-19. That puts the county “on track to meet these revenue goals by the end of the year if the rest of the season holds up, both weather and otherwise,” Struck said.

The county has projected $1.8 million in revenue for the year from its two courses at Mee-Kwon in Mequon and Hawthorne Hills in the Town of Saukville.

One source of additional revenue has been the expansion of the county’s fleet of golf carts, Struck said.

“We rented additional golf carts to service our customers, particularly in light of our safety measures for Covid. So, we have added rental carts to the mix of our owned golf carts to increase the size of the fleet,” he said.

“We will be considering purchasing additional golf carts as we don’t see the need to have more carts available ending anytime soon.”

Activity at county parks is also increasing.

“Reservations at parks are picking up and getting closer to historic averages,” Struck said.
