A concession to Mother Nature

Waves on Monday broke over a section of the Port Washington breakwater where the railing, which has been destroyed in the past by winter storms, is missing. In a concession to Mother Nature, the city ultimately replaced the section of railing with one that is removed in winter — when a sign warning of its absence is erected — and replaced in spring. Public Works Director Rob Vanden Noven said the handrail is expected to be back in place by May 1 and the sign removed. Photos by Bill Schanen IV
