Center to feature artist whose media is boxes

Paper artist Joyce Gitter is the November artist-in residence at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

Gitter always enjoyed creative ventures but put them aside while raising her family. She crafts with paper, including scrapbooking, making cards, doing mixed-media projects, hand lettering, paper and fabric marbling and making journals.

Most recently, Gitter has been engaging in cartonnage, the art of decorative box-making with paper and fabric.

Gitter said she enjoys sharing the joy of creating beautiful, functional, custom-made items with others, saying, “It’s just plain fun.”

Gitter will demonstrate her art from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 4, 5, 6, 12, 13, 18 and 20.

She will also teach  a workshop, Modern Cartonnage, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Saturday, Nov. 13, at the center.

Students will learn basic box construction techniques and create a functional hinged-lid box based on traditional French practices, but with a Brazilian twist. Those attending will bring their choice of one fat quarter of cotton quilting fabric in two coordinating designs. Black and solid color fabrics should not be used.

Other supplies, including the hinged lid box kit, are provided. The fee is $64 for center members and $77 for nonmembers.

To register or for more information, visit cedarburgculturalcenter.org/adult-teen-classes, email Kerry@ArtMusicHistory.org or call 375-3676.

Class size will be limited, and masks are required for all participants and instructors.

The center is at W62 N546 Washington Ave.
