Author to discuss her father’s WWII service

Cedarburg author Louise Endres Moore will discuss the book she wrote about her father and his role in World War II during a 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, program at the Port Exploreum.

“Alfred: The Quiet History of a WWII Infantryman” tells the story of Moore’s father Alfred, who never spoke of being on the frontline during World War II. Instead, he told his family he had been a barber, chauffeur, and German language translator with the U.S. Army.

But after his wife died, Alfred reluctantly began to share a more complete story during weekly visits with his daughter. It took two decades to discover the complete story, that he was a front-line machine gunner in Europe during 1944 and 1945.

He returned home after the war, discernibly the gentle Wisconsin farmer he was when he left, to a family unaware of what he had done and survived.

Moore will have books for purchase.

Tickets are free to adult members of the Port Washington Historical Society and $5 for nonmembers. Children are admitted free, but a ticket is required.
