‘Who the #$&% is Jackson Pollock’ screening kicks off library’s September events

The Oscar Grady Library in Saukville will kick off its September events with a screening of the film “Who the #$&% is Jackson Pollock” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7.

The movie, directed by Harry Moses, tells the story of an elderly woman who drives a semi truck for a living and lives in a trailer park. She buys what she believes is a Jackson Pollock painting from a thrift store for $5 but is met with snobbery and disbelief when she takes it to several renowned art dealers.

A discussion will follow the movie during this program for adults.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, teenagers will gather on the library’s patio for a Teen Connection: Mindfulness Journaling program from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Mindfulness is the practice of becoming aware of one’s present-moment experience with compassion and openness as a basis for action, and teens ages 12 to 18 will practice this discipline by refocusing through journaling with pens and colored pencils.

The program will be held indoors in case of inclement weather.

An adult book discussion about “Our Missing Hearts” by Celeste Ng will be held in the library’s community room from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

The book tells the story of 12-year-old Bird Gardner, who is pulled into a quest to find his mother by a cryptic drawing he receives. Through the ranks of an underground network of heroic librarians, he finally learns the truth about what happened to his mother and what the future holds for both of them.

Copies of the book are available for check out at the library.

Sweet treats and good reads will be the focus of the Recipe Club meeting from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Sept. 21.

Participants are asked to bring their most decadent desserts and a copy of the recipe to share, then check out the library’s selection of mysteries by Joanne Fluke featuring Hannah Swensen, a bakery owner and amateur sleuth. Each book includes a recipe.

New members are invited. To register, call the library at (262) 284-6022.

Also on Thursday, Sept. 21, Dorothy Monson will teach the basics of preserving food using the water bath canning method during an Adventures in Canning program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the community room.

Monson, who has more than 60 years of canning experience, will share samples and recipes.

The event will be held again from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

The library has events planned for young people during a day off of school on Friday, Sept. 29.

From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., teens ages 12 to 18 are invited to the reading area to find small pictures and text from print media to make a collage reflecting their emotions.

At 1 p.m. on Sept. 29, the library will show the movie “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” Participants are invited to bring snacks.

Morning storytimes for children and their caregivers will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 3 through Oct. 31

The storytimes are filled with rhymes, songs, dancing and stories suited for children ages 2 to 5.

Evening storytimes for families will be held from 6:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays from Oct. 4 through Nov. 1.

Children can come dressed in their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed animals.
