Grafton hurler is living the MLB dream

Much like hitters he faces, Adam Lukas didn’t exactly know what was coming in the Major League Baseball draft this month.

The Grafton resident and University of Evansville junior pitcher figured he would be drafted. Several teams were interested. But when and by which team was in question.

In the 12th round and the 349th overall pick, it happened.

Lukas and his parents saw his name pop up on the screen as he was selected by the Kansas City Royals. Seconds later, a scout called to confirm the pick.

It was a special moment.

PW-S Board OKs budget, use of savings for expenses

The Port Washington-Saukville School Board last week approved a preliminary 2019-20 budget that would essentially hold the line on property taxes while maintaining educational programs.

The budget calls for a tax levy of $16.2 million, a 2.2% decrease that amounts to $355,778.

The tax rate would drop by 39 cents to $9.14 per $1,000 of valuation. Theoretically, that would give most taxpayers a small tax break.

The payment on the district’s $45.9 million referendum debt — a major factor in the tax levy — will be slightly lower than last year at $3.2 million.

A ‘hero’s send off’ for girl who touched neighborhood

A little girl, who with her family, was supported by their Port Washington neighborhood during her fight with cancer, received a “hero’s send off” from area firefighters and law enforcement at her funeral on June 11.

Two-year-old Avery Handrow died  Thursday, June 6, of rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of soft tissue, in her face.

Revenues add up to good times for county

These are good times for Ozaukee County government finances.

Savings accounts are fatter. Interest rate earnings are up. Sales tax collections continue to climb. Delinquent tax payments are down.

“This is really good stuff,” county Treasurer Josh Morrison said.

For instance:

• Sales tax revenue through March and reported in May totaled nearly $1.8 million, with $796,918 in March alone.

“These are (the equivalent of) Christmas dollars,” Morrison said, noting that March is often when people buy new cars and start getting tax refunds.

Happy 90th birthday, Rotary

Keller to step down after 42 years with PWPD

Port Washington Police Captain Mike Keller will officially retire on Sept. 17.

Keller, whose last day on the job will be June 27, is the department’s senior officer, having served since June 14, 1977.

Mayor Marty Becker on Tuesday lauded Keller, thanking him for his 42 years of service to the city.

“I know his love for the city is true,” Becker said. “It’s a city he loves and he’s dedicated his service to.”

Bid for town roadwork is a heart-stopper

The lone bid to reconstruct Hawthorne Drive in the Town of Port Washington came in at almost $260,000, which is roughly half of the town’s annual operating budget.

The Town Board recently rejected the bid for the 1-1/4-mile project after the cost came in significantly higher than expected.

Payne and Dolan bid $258,000 on the project, which would have extended from Highway KK to Highway H.

That amount doesn’t include the cost of installing a new culvert that’s needed, board members noted.

Port Police Department to host June 27 bike rodeo

The Port Washington Police Department will hold its annual bicycle rodeo from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Lincoln Elementary School in Port Washington.

Children may be eligible for a free bicycle helmet once they complete the bicycle safety course. 

T-shirts, snacks, a bicycle raffle, drinks and other giveaways will also be available.

No advance registration is necessary. 

The school is at 1325 Theis Ln.

Airstream food trailer planned for Franklin St.

The concept of parking an Airstream trailer on a grassy lot on Franklin Street in downtown Port Washington and serving ice cream and other seasonal treats from it was recommended for approval Tuesday by the city’s Design Review Board.

But not all the board members were enthused about the idea, with Marc Eernisse, an adviser to the panel, saying he does not believe it fits with the city’s historic downtown.

“An Airstream trailer in beautiful downtown Port Washington doesn’t appeal to me,” Eernisse said.  “I don’t think it fits with our concept of downtown.”

After a century, school’s out for good

Friday, like every other last day of school, the teachers at St. John XXIII School’s St. Mary’s Campus said goodbye to their students and began to pack up their rooms for the year.

But this wasn’t just any end of the school day — it was the end of an era. When these students and teachers left the school, it was for the last time.

After educating generations of students over more than a century, St. Mary’s School in Port Washington is closed. Next year, classes will meet in new classrooms being added onto the school’s St. Peter’s Campus.
