Literacy Center asks for gifts to match grant

Thanks to a $6,000 challenge grant, every dollar the Adult Literacy Center of Ozaukee County receives through Dec. 31 will be matched, up to $6,000.

Bob and Jan Blazich, the Endowment fund at Grace Lutheran Church-Grafton and the Zaun Foundation are making the grant .

The ALC helps its students work toward completing their high school equivalency exam, improving their general education skills, learn English as a second language or gain their U.S. citizenship, including three in 2019. 

Complex, costly woman-drugging case inches toward trial

What’s shaping up to be one of the most expensive and most complicated trials ever in Ozaukee County could get even costlier if the case is moved to another county, District Attorney Adam Gerol told the Ozaukee County Public Safety Committee Tuesday.

That comes a week after a Washington County judge struck down an attempt to prevent expert testimony from a French pharmacist in the case against a former Ozaukee County man charged with drugging a woman at his Cedarburg restaurant in 2014.

City residents fight cell pole proposal to no avail

A crowd of about 20 residents of the Matthaeus Farms subdivision in the City of Port Washington — an upscale, green neighborhood on the city’s south side — last week asked the Town of Port Washington Plan Commission to turn down a request by US Cellular to erect a monopole near their homes.

New security station causes backups at Justice Center

Lines can be a little longer these days at the Ozaukee County Justice Center on South Spring Street in Port Washington, thanks to recently installed security improvements at the building’s main entrance.

Especially around 8 a.m. when the doors first open as people are waiting to get in to get to court hearings, Ozaukee County Clerk of Courts Mary Lou Mueller said.

“We’ve had jury members waiting in line out the door and standing in the cold,” she said.

Man accused of assaulting girl who just turned 16

An 18-year-old Port Washington man was charged in Ozaukee County Circuit Court last week with sexually assaulting a girl just days after her 16th birthday.

The girl told a forensic interviewer last month that in August Trenton J. Jaeger gave her a marijuana cigarette that she believes was laced with something that made her feel like she could not move, then led her to a secluded outdoor area in Port Washington where he pinned her down and sexually assaulted her, according to the criminal complaint. 

Condo owners ask city to budget for flood fix

Residents of the Lighthouse Condominiums on Tuesday asked the Port Washington Common Council to include money in its 2020 budget to help protect their property from flooding.

Although money for the project wasn’t in the budget adopted Tuesday, Bob Dreblow, a former city engineer who was hired by the Lighthouse Condominium Association to help find a solution to persistent flooding, asked aldermen to find the money to install a trash rack on Valley Creek next year.

Some drivers didn’t get the text message

Ozaukee County Sheriff Jim Johnson put the word out with press releases, signs and on social media that his deputies, as well as personnel from the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Mequon Police Department, would be on the lookout on Friday, Nov. 15, for people texting, or otherwise distracted, while they were driving.

But a lot of people apparently didn’t get the message.

Last Friday, officers were on the lookout for distracted drivers and pulled over 64 people for a variety of suspected offenses. 

Port council, donors back breakwater art plan

Port Washington’s breakwater is expected to become a colorful version of itself this spring.

That’s because the Common Council on Tuesday approved Bill Prince’s plan to paint the vertical walls of the breakwater in varying shades of blue to reflect the various colors of the lake.

The deepest blues will be close to shore and the palest colors near the white lighthouse.

Aldermen OK budget that maintains programs, hikes tax rate

Port Washington aldermen on Tuesday approved a $9.9 million general fund operating budget for 2020, up 2.2% from this year.

The tax levy is proposed to be $3.5 million while the tax rate needed to raise that amount is projected to be $6.60 per $1,000 assessed valuation. 

That’s an increase of 31 cents per $1,000, or 4.9%, from last year’s rate of $6.29 per $1,000.

No one spoke during a public hearing on the budget Tuesday.

The budget is a largely status quo financial plan that maintains virtually all the city programs, officials said.
