Healthy soil workshop to be held Feb. 6

Local farmers can learn about improving the soil health and profitability of their farms at a Soil Health Workshop to be held  from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Ozaukee County Fairgrounds Pavilion.

The featured speaker will be Russel Hedrick, a farmer from North Carolina.

Hedrick was winner of the 2016 North Carolina Dryland No-till Yield Contest and received the 2014 North Carolina Innovative Young Farmer of the Year award for his use of new technologies and cover crops.

Gales, record-high lake pummel Port

Record high January lake levels combined with gale force winds Saturday to create a rare and fierce storm that overwhelmed and damaged the Port Washington breakwater and threatened private property along the Ozaukee County coastline.

“Storms on the lake are nothing new, but we haven’t seen water this high. The combination caused a lot more damage and erosion than we’ve seen in the past,” Public Works Director Rob Vanden Noven said.

County Board rejects move to put redistricting on ballot

The Ozaukee County Board on Wednesday voted 16-10 before a crowded gallery to reject a resolution that called for putting a referendum on the spring ballot urging the state Legislature to create a nonpartisan method of drawing new elected district boundaries.

“I think you have an opportunity to make our voting system more fair and just,” said county resident Dean Johnson, one of more than 20 people who asked to speak to supervisors before they voted.

Judge finds commission in contempt before higher court steps in

A state appeals court stayed a ruling by Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Paul Malloy to purge voter registration lists and negated Malloy’s finding on Monday to hold the state Elections Commission and three of its members in contempt.

The District 4 Court of Appeals in Madison made the decision on Tuesday even as the Elections Commission once again remained deadlocked over whether to obey Malloy’s order to clear the voter registration lists of more than 200,000 people who apparently had moved and no longer lived at the address contained in the registration.

Design bids support $5 million firehouse estimate

After reviewing bids from firms interested in designing a new fire station for the City of Port Washington, officials said it looks like a new station can be built for the $5 million estimate.

“I definitely think it will be no more than that,” Fire Chief Mark Mitchell said Tuesday. “I think we’ll come in and get a good facility for under $5 million.”

Mitchell, who said many of the cost estimates are based on square footage, said he has talked to other fire chiefs and, given a competitive bidding environment, believes the cost could come in even lower.

Railroad still vital for local businesses

Every day thousands of vehicles travel up and down I-43 — trucks hauling goods from Chicago to Green Bay and beyond, commuters heading to and from their jobs and shoppers completing their errands.

Just yards away, running parallel to the Interstate, is another economic, largely unheeded, lifeline that runs the length of Ozaukee County that is vital to local businesses and the regional economy.

“Railroads are extremely important to the economy of southeast Wisconsin,” Ozaukee County Supr. Tom Winker, of Belgium, said.

Higher court strikes Voiland’s running order

A sentence imposed by Ozaukee County Judge Joseph Voiland in 2017 that required a middle-aged woman to compete in three running races, including a 13-mile half-marathon, or risk going back to prison was certainly unorthodox.

It was also unreasonable, the District 2 Wisconsin Court of Appeals ruled in a decision dated Dec. 30. The court granted Marcella G. Guerrero’s motion for reversal, with which prosecutors agreed, and remanded the case to Voiland’s successor, Judge Steve Cain, with an order to vacate the running conditions.

State to unveil I-43 reconstruction, widening plan

The public can get its first look at details of plans to widen I-43 from four to six lanes from Silver Spring Road in Milwaukee to Highway 60 in Grafton at two meetings next week. 

The state Department of Transportation will hold the first meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Mequon City Hall. The second meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Nicolet High School.

A “local officials” meeting also will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Mequon City Hall for county and municipal officials and staff.

County may lease park land for solar panel field

The Ozaukee County Public Works Committee last month voted that the county negotiate the terms under which it would lease 3.9 acres at Mee-Kwon Park Golf Course in Mequon to We Energies to erect solar panels.

Last week’s vote doesn’t obligate the county to leasing the land but reserves a place for the county in the company’s Solar Now program, of which the Village of Saukville and Port Washington-Saukville School District have already become a part. 

Ozaukee County judge finds Wisconsin Elections Commission, its Democratic members in contempt

An Ozaukee County judge on Monday found the state Elections Commission and its three Democratic Party members in contempt a court order last month that the commission notify more than 200,000 registered voters that they had 30 days to update their addresses or be removed from voter rolls as state law requires.
