Town considers zoning change to help save historical barns

Attempting to maintain the rural character of the community and preserve historical barns and other structures, the Town of Saukville Plan Commission on Tuesday recommended that an ordinance be drafted to make it easier for farmers to subdivide their property.

The ordinance would exempt farmsteads currently zoned for agricultural use from limits on the number of buildings and their total square footage when being subdivided to create A4- or A5-zoned lots of five acres or more.

Volunteers needed to help launch summer lunch program in park

The Saukville Community Food Pantry is looking for volunteers to help organize a Lunch in the Park program this summer at Grady Park in Saukville for children who don’t get free lunch at school during the summer.

“We’ll provide the food if we can find volunteers to make the sandwiches, pack them into lunch bags and help hand the food out,” said Mark Gierach, pantry executive director. 

It would be the first time the pantry has offered a summer lunch program for school-age children and hopefully won’t be the last, Gierach said. 

Many hands help the homeless

Filling 750 backpacks with everything from tissues and snacks to socks and hats for homeless people is a tall order, but not too tall for a group of students from Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Port Washington, a company and the Feith Family Ozaukee YMCA, where volunteers gathered Tuesday to complete the project in just hours.

Candidates unopposed so far for area races in 2020

Candidate filings for Saukville village and county supervisor seats are now being accepted for the April 7, 2020, general election.

Candidates could begin circulating nominating papers on Sunday, Dec. 1.

Three trustee seats on the Saukville Village Board will be on the ballot. Those seats are currently held by Scott Fischer, James Nowlen and Trevor Seitz.

All three were elected in April 2018, Nowlen and Seitz for the first time. Fischer was first elected in 2014.

Village trustees serve two-year terms.

Legion to host annual Christmas festivities this weekend

The Landt-Thiel American Legion Post 470 Auxiliary will host its annual Christmas at the Legion from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Saturday, Dec. 7, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the American Legion Hall, 601 W. Dekora St., Saukville.  

This event includes the sale of Christmas cookies and bakery, homemade crafts, a soup and sandwich lunch and “Christmas Corner Specials.”

The Saukville Historical Society also will be selling items during the event.

Tickets on sale for Saukville Chamber’s holiday social Dec. 11 at local restaurant

The Saukville Chamber of Commerce’s annual holiday social will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Messina’s Italian restaurant, 151 N. Progress Drive, in Saukville.

Tickets for the event are $10 for Chamber members and $15 for nonmembers.

Attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the Saukville Community Food Pantry.

Winter parking restrictions in effect throughout village

Winter parking restrictions went into effect in the Village of Saukville on Dec. 1.

No parking will be allowed for more than 30 minutes on village streets from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. each day through April 1.

Newburg keeps 2020 budget flat amid ‘disarray’

The Newburg Village Board’s 2020 budget is largely unchanged from 2019, as the village climbs out of what officials call the administrative and fiscal “disarray” left by the previous administration.

That includes a discovery that the village may have paid thousands of dollars too much to its former clerk, Rick Goeckner, after he resigned in May.

Town seeks pre-trial ruling in garage spat with couple

A long-running legal dispute between the Town of Saukville and a couple who built an apartment over their garage — allegedly in violation of local zoning, and which is due to go to trial in January — could end next month as a judge is set to rule on a motion for summary judgment.

Town Attorney Sarah MacCarthy made the motion earlier this month, and Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Steve Cain is scheduled to rule on it Dec. 16.

The dispute is scheduled for a two-day trial Jan. 30 and 31.
