Port pool won’t open but council OKs events

The Port Washington outdoor pool will not open this summer, the Common Council agreed Tuesday night.

But aldermen agreed to allow the Port farmers market and the beer gardens to proceed this summer with precautions taken to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

If there are issues or the virus spikes, the city reserves the right to cancel these events, officials said.

The council only took action on those events occurring in June and July. Action is expected on August events in the coming weeks.

“It was an absolute rush” when the SpaceX capsule and Falcon 9 rocket took off Saturday afternoon on the first U.S. launch to the International Space Station in almost a decade, Port Washington native Mike Hess said. 

While that feeling was shared by people around the globe, it was especially true for Hess, a 1986 Port Washington High School graduate who is operations integration manager for NASA’s commercial crew program.

Port council backs nature preserve proposal

The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday threw its support behind the proposed Cedar Gorge Clay Bluffs Nature Preserve to be developed on 135 acres of the former Cedar Vineyard land.

Aldermen voted 6-1 to approve a resolution supporting a plan by the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust and Ozaukee County to purchase the property on the city’s far southeast side. 

The resolution is needed as the county and Land Trust seek a $2 million Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant from the Department of Natural Resources needed to purchase the property from Waukesha State Bank.

Pomp and circumstance to hit the road

If it were any other year, Port Washington High School graduates clad in green caps and gowns would file into the school gym as the band played “Pomp and Circumstance,” then take that proud walk across the stage to receive their diplomas on Sunday.

But this is the year of the pandemic, so Port High is taking its pomp and circumstance on the road with a graduation parade through downtown Port on June 7.

One man rescued, another lost in cold lake

Authorities who rescued a Town of Port Washington man found clinging to his capsized boat in cold Lake Michigan Sunday continued this week to search for the body of his friend, who is presumed drowned. 

Terry Strutz, 68, who was hypothermic and essentially unresponsive when rescuers found him about eight miles east-southeast of Port, was taken by the Port Washington Fire Department boat to shore, then by ambulance to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton before being flown to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, according to authorities. 

Port to join study of shared fire, EMS services

The City of Port Washington will participate in a study of shared fire and emergency medical services, aldermen agreed Tuesday, but whether that delays the city’s work toward a new fire station has yet to be decided.

With little comment Tuesday, the Common Council approved spending $3,200 to participate in the study conducted by Wisconsin Policy Forum.

Six other county municipalities — the cities of Cedarburg and Mequon, villages of Thiensville, Grafton and Saukville and town of Cedarburg — will decide by June 15 whether to take part in the study.

Port swimming pool a likely victim of pandemic

It’s likely the Port Washington outdoor pool will be closed for the season this year and the fate of other events such as the beer gardens and farmers market hang in the balance as city officials grapple with what a summer in the midst of a pandemic looks like.

Aldermen last week indicated a willingness to close the pool this summer, and City Administrator Tony Brown said Tuesday that will be his recommendation as well.

“It’s unfortunate because many people enjoy the pool,” Brown said, but safety must come first.

Several aldermen agreed last week.

A drive-by farewell for a beloved teacher

Sue Krier is retiring June 15 after 42 years as a parochial school teacher in Port Washington — but that doesn’t mean you won’t see her in the classroom this fall.

Krier hopes to be back at school as a part-time aide.

“Maybe five or six hours a week to help out. I would love to do that,” she said.

Officials worry nature preserve will limit Port growth

The Port Washington Common Council will be asked to approve a resolution June 2 endorsing a plan to create the Clay Bluffs Cedar Gorge Nature Preserve on 135 acres of land that was once part of the proposed Cedar Vineyard subdivision on the city’s southeast side.

The show of support for efforts by the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust and Ozaukee County to acquire the land from Waukesha State Bank is a requirement for the groups to potentially receive a $2 million Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant from the Department of Natural Resources.

A surprise goodbye for a longtime Pirate

When an entire school is in on the surprise, it’s not easy keeping it a secret, but organizers of a farewell car parade last week for Port Washington High School Principal Eric Burke pulled it off. “I was completely surprised,” Burke said. “It’s something I will never forget.” Burke waved (top photo) as staff members and students drove past his house in cars decorated with messages of appreciation.
