Libraries host Family Day at Horicon Marsh June 29

The seventh annual Family Fun Day at the Horicon Marsh sponsored by the monarch Library System will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 29.

Also known as Library Day at the Marsh, the library system and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources hold a day of nature, hands-on learning and experiences, history, crafts, food and fun.

There will be a special story time at 11 a.m. with Alaska the Therapy Dog.

Local students earn UW-Madison honors

Thirty-seven area students have earned academic honors for the spring semester at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Christopher Mueller of Belgium was  named to the dean’s list in the School of Business.

Alexander Hurley and Hannah Nordby of Fredonia were named to the dean’s list in the  College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Michael Richter of Fredonia was named to the dean’s list in the School of Business.

Grafton residents named to the dean’s list in the School of Business are Evan Agnew, Claire Liu and Eric Schumacher.

Discovering the county’s natural treasures

Saturday was the 10th annual Treasures of Oz, a tour of six of Ozaukee County’s natural areas that sometimes go unnoticed. This year’s event also showcased the ARTservancy project, an initiative between Gallery 224 in Port Washington and the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust. Mentors, students celebrate a job well done

Marking the completion of the sixth year of Port Washington High School’s Community Mentor Program, students and adults gathered for a celebration at the school last month. The program brings adult and peer mentors together with other students in an effort to nurture relationships, improve the school culture and student performance and reduce truancy.

June 20 ribbon cutting, beer garden to open stage

    A ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the new stage at the Port Washington beer garden will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 20.
    In addition, a beer garden and community potluck will be held in Upper Lake Park from 6 to 8 p.m.
    “We have a band, and the potluck is meant for everyone to sit down together as a community and enjoy what we have to offer,” Recreation Director Kiley Schulte said, noting everyone is asked to bring a dish to pass for the dinner.
    “The stage is beautiful and a wonderful addition to the beer garden and the park.”

Port State Bank to offer bike-decorating kits

    Port Washington State Bank will provide  bike-decorating kits beginning Monday, June 24, for children who want to participate in Port’s Fourth of July parade.
     Kits will be available only at the bank’s Port location while supplies last.  Children don’t have to have an account with the bank to obtain a kit.
    Youngsters are invited to bring their decorated bikes, wagons, strollers and scooters downtown to participate in the 10 a.m. July 4 parade, which ends at Veterans Park.

Democrats to meet on June 19 in Saukville

    The Democratic Party of Ozaukee County will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday, June 19, at the Saukville Municipal Center.
    At the June and July meetings, the party will accept supplies and cash donations for the Saukville Pantry’s school-supply drive.
    Items needed include blue, black and red ink pens, pink erasers, children’s scissors, pencils, colored pencils and erasable markers in various colors.  

Registrations accepted for Fish Day run, walk

Registrations are being accepted for the 34th annual Fish Day Run/Walk on Saturday, July 20, in Port Washington.  

The event is the largest annual fundraiser for Portal, Inc., a non-profit agency serving adults with disabilities in Ozaukee County.

People can register for the competitive, chip-timed 8-kilometer run and family-oriented 2 -mile run or walk through Friday, July 12.

 The cost of early registration is $25 per person or $20 per person for families of three or more people.

Home-delivered meal program seeks volunteers

    Volunteers are being sought for the Ozaukee County home-delivered meal program.
    The program delivers a hot, freshly prepared meal to home bound individuals Mondays through Fridays. For some, it is the only nourishing meal they receive in a day.
    The delivery program also provides a safety check for seniors, especially those who live alone.
    Volunteers, who delivered 35,973 meals last year, report seniors are often eagerly waiting for their meal to be delivered.

Marquette names students to dean’s list

June 12, 2019

    Sixteen local students were named to the spring dean’s list at Marquette University.
    Students from Port Washington who made the list include Alexander Burbach, Allyson Doll, Elizabeth Klein and Lillie Cook.
    Students from Grafton are Jack Birch, Grace Bjurstrom, Isaac Brust, Maggie Cleary, Sarmad Haider, Summer Schmitt and Gabrielle Wroblewski.
    From Belgium, students include Colin Barrington, Tristan Barrington, Gretchen Geiser and Monica Geiser.
    Christopher Holdway of Saukville also made the list.
