Grafton’s ‘Cinderella’ nominated for 19 Jerry Awards

Grafton High School’s fall musical “Cinderella” has received 19 Jerry Award nominations, the most ever given to the school for one production.

The Jerry Awards program singles out the best in Wisconsin high school musical theater, a state recognition  similar to Tony Awards for Broadway productions.

“Congratulations to our entire fine arts department with these nominations, and specifically director Maggie Condon,” Grafton Supt. Jeff Nelson said.

Death of teen in crash brings holiday sorrow

The holiday break is filled with heavy hearts in two communities after a teenager was killed in a one-vehicle accident last week in the Town of Belgium.

Ben Schrap, 17, who lived in the Village of Belgium but attended Grafton High School, will be remembered for being a good friend.

Lake Shore Rd. structure razed as requested by Town of Grafton

Excavators recently removed a dilapidated structure after the Grafton Town Board issued a raze order in October. 

Town Chairman Lester Bartel said a residential-type structure at 614 Lake Shore Rd. was built in the mid-1980s with no permits from the town. The structure abuts a neighboring property line. 

“The issue of demolishing the structure on the property has been an emotional issue for our beneficiary,” said Victor Schultz of Prairie Trust, a trustee of the estate overseeing the property.

Part of River Bend Rd. to become Cheyenne Ave. due to street extension

A portion of River Bend Road in the Town of Grafton will be renamed as Cheyenne Avenue starting Jan. 1.

The change in street names is due to the construction of the Blue Stem subdivision, which will be annexed into the village. 

Plans show Cheyenne Avenue being extended south of Falls Road and east to Port Washington Road. The name change will occur on River Bend Road south of  Lakefield Road.

Officials said five properties will be affected with the change, but their house numbers won’t change.

Friends of the Park group being planned

The Village of Grafton is seeking to create a nonprofit Friends of the Park group to provide amenities and resources for outdoor recreation spaces.  

“We’ve talked about it several times over the years. The problem was finding citizens of the community who would like to be a part of that and lead it,” Parks and Recreation Director John Safstrom said.

Last month, Safstrom formally proposed creating the group to the Parks and Recreation Board. The nonprofit group would be a separate entity from the village.

Village takes step to buy former Clark station site

The Village of Grafton is seeking a waiver from the Ozaukee County Board for several years of delinquent taxes owed on the former Clark gas station site downtown.

The Village Board on Monday discussed in closed session a resolution requesting the county to forgive $27,940 in back taxes on the property at 1020 Washington St. The board unanimously approved the resolution in open session.

Town bans use of shipping containers on private land

The Town of Grafton has banned the use of shipping containers on private property after issuing a six-month moratorium on the practice in the summer. 

The Town Board on Wednesday, Dec. 11, unanimously approved an amendment to the public nuisance ordinance that prohibits using shipping containers as buildable material or for storage.

The prohibition includes semitrailers, which board members earlier said are similar to shipping containers. 

“The potential negatives outweigh the potential positives,” Town Chairman Lester Bartel said of the ordinance change.
