Ethereal plants hold their own against garden show-offs

The late summer garden is all about bold and brash flowers both in size and color. Dahlias, zinnias coneflowers and black-eyed susans create a colorful garden with something to grab your attention at every turn.

For as much as I appreciate the ultra-saturated feast for the senses of the waning summer garden, it’s the less showy and underappreciated ethereal plants that make it come alive now.

Students earn degrees from UW-La Crosse

Seventeen area students graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in May.

  McKenna Jens of Fredonia earned a bachelor of science degree in therapeutic recreation.

  Teja Bhimavarapu of Grafton received a bachelor of science degree in biology with a concentration in biomedical science and graduated with honors.

  Zach Gephart of Grafton earned a bachelor of science degree in computer science.

Jake Gracyalny of Grafton received a bachelor of science degree in finance.

Grafton student is named to dean’s list

Property fraud alert system now available

Ozaukee County residents can sign up for a free online subscription service to help them detect fraudulent activity regarding their property.

The program, announced by Register of Deeds Ron Voigt, allows residents to have their name and property monitored within the Register of Deeds office.

Residents who sign up for the program will be notified when the name they have submitted is used in any recording activities within the office. Residents will have the option to be notified via email, text or telephone call.

Getting creative to deal with glut of veggies, guilt

Vegetable gardens come with a healthy serving of guilt, and while that may sound like a bitter harvest, I find that it can lead to a burst of creativity.

Surely I’m not the only gardener who plants the vegetable garden in a manner that is sometimes more aspirational than it is realistic. I plant more of one vegetable than I could ever use and try new vegetables that I rarely buy from the store but somehow think I’ll eat a bushel of from my own garden.

Be creative when using your zucchini harvest

Zucchini is a vastly underrated food, perhaps because it’s relatively easy to grow and prolific in terms of the amount of produce that is harvested from a single plant.

While it’s easily found in the grocery store and at farmers markets, consider yourself blessed if a friend offers you a few zucchini from the bounty in their garden.

Zucchini has a delicate flavor and color. Because of that, it is often seen as a supporting character in terms of cooking.

Tickets on sale for return of Port Garden Walk on Sept. 9

The Port Washington Garden Club’s garden walk, which has been on hiatus since 2018, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Six gardens in the City of Port will be on the walk, all within 2-1/2 miles of each other. They will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The gardens include:
