Taking a hike for veterans

It was a perfect day for a hike Saturday, and a number of area residents took the chance to do just that and raise money for Camp American Legion in the process. A group of World War II re-enactors joined organizers for a photo (photo above) at the start of the Bike and Hike for Vets that traversed the Ozaukee Interurban Trail from Port Washington to Kyotes Bar & Grill in Belgium. The event was sponsored by Legion posts 82, 410 and 412 and their auxiliaries.

For plants on the ‘out’ list, it’s auf wiedersehen

Late summer is a good time for garden observation. Most garden chores involve watering dramatic plants in containers that have become too small as their roots grow to fill the pots and deadheading to keep the flower show growing. Fortunately both of these jobs allow for a lot of looking around.

Cedarburg grad, Army vet to speak

  Thomas Deits, a 1964 Cedarburg High School graduate and veteran of the Vietnam War, is the speaker for the Monday, Sept. 18, meeting of the Metro Milwaukee Military Historians.

Deits, who lives in Madison, earned a degree at the University of Wisconsin Law School before joining the Army.

After training at Fort Campbell, Ky., Deits went overseas with the First Infantry Division “Big Red One.” Arriving in February 1969, he fought for a year, often as point, and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star and, after being twice wounded, the Purple Heart.

Grafton student earns summer honors

A Grafton student has earned honors for the summer semester at Southern New Hampshire University.

Andrew Wilkin was named to the president’s list at the Manchester, N.H., school.

Students named to the list have a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.

Forty-seven students earn Concordia honors

Forty-seven area students have been named to the spring honors list at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon.

  Brooke Braga of Belgium is a junior majoring in nursing.

Maria Dries is a senior from Belgium studying interior architecture and design.

Belgium resident James Pape, a sophomore, is studying applied theology.

Jordan Sells of Belgium, a sophomore, is majoring in management.

Cheyenne Biernat of Fredonia is a senior studying psychology.

Fredonia residents Allison Clark, a sophomore, and  Selena Esparza, a junior, are studying nursing.

Mobile food pantry hours for fall set

Family Sharing has announced its mobile food pantry hours through November.

The mobile pantry visits four locations in the county on Thursdays.

  On Sept. 14 and 28, the pantry will be at the Luxembourg Cultural Center from 1 to 1:45 p.m. and the Waubeka Fire Station from 2:15 to 3 p.m.

Art museum to celebrate a decade

The Cedarburg Art Museum’s newest exhibit is “A Decade of Collection Acquisitions, a special exhibition commemorating the museum’s history while also looking forward to its future.

The exhibit opens Tuesday, Sept. 26, and runs through Jan. 14.

The museum started with 49 paintings donated to the people of Cedarburg by an Ozaukee Bank trust fund, and a selection of these works will be part of the exhibit.

The museum will host a number of programs to celebrate the past decade, when it has been housed at W63 N675 Washington Ave.

Port parish’s brat fry to be held Sept. 16

A brat fry will be held by St. John’s Lutheran Church in Port Washington from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16.

The brat fry will be at Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly in Saukville.

Proceeds from the brat fry will go toward an education fund for a youth from Madagascar who is studying to become a Lutheran Church Missouri Synod pastor at the Fort Wayne Seminary.

The student is a graduate of Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon who is on a vicarage at a Colorado church before completing his last year of studies.

Harrington harvest hike is set for Sept. 23

A harvest hike will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Harrington Beach State Park in the Town of Belgium.

The hike, hosted by the Friends of Harrington Beach State Park, also includes live music by Clover Wonder from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Those walking may create their own walking sticks during a 5 p.m. program at the quarry shelter.
