Grafton uses hard hitting, tough defense to score 3-game sweep in North Shore Conference showdown

It was Parent and Senior Night on Oct. 10 for the Port Washington volleyball team, but Grafton did most of the celebrating.
The Black Hawks swept the Pirates, 25-15, 25-16, 25-16.
“The game didn’t go the way we wanted. The girls fought hard and never quit,” Port coach Mary Kay Heinz said.
GRAFTONB VB (CR) s1101017085For Grafton, Sarah Schmitz led the way with 15 kills, and Sophia De La Pasqua had six. Ava Schimmelpfenning had 13 assists, and Josephine Gust had nine.
Lauren Stielow made 15 digs. Erika Stielow, Selena Esparza and Delaney Reidl each had eight digs. Schmitz served six aces.
For Port, Jordyn Rabideaux had seven kills and Gretchen Lilly had 12 assists. Jessica Mikyska had eight digs.
Lilly, Mikyska, Carmen Hoag, Olivia Biertzer and Lizzy Karrels were honored as seniors. They, Heinz said, “have been the best leaders I could ever ask for.”
Grafton earned a No. 3 seed in the WIAA Division 2 playoffs and was to host No. 14-seeded Milwaukee Lutheran on Tuesday. The winner faces the winner of a match between No. 6-seeded Shorewood and No. 11-seeded Milwaukee School of Languages match on Thursday.
Port earned a 12 seed in Division 2 and was to play at No. 5-seeded Plymouth on Tuesday. The winner on Thursday faces the winner of the match between No. 4-seeded Kewaskum and No. 13-seeded Brown Deer.
Ozaukee swept host Elkhart Lake on Oct. 10 by scores of 25-18, 25-13, 26-24.
Freshman Sydnie Stadler led the Warriors with 10 digs, seven kills and five aces. She was also 21-1 at the service line. Rachel Liermann tallied eight kills.
Cayleigh Ebersold was perfect in 12 service attempts and dished out 13 assists. Naiomi Smith finished with 14 assists.
The Warriors finished the season with an 18-17 record.
Ozaukee earned a No. 8 seed in the Division 3 playoffs and was to host No. 9-seeded Random Lake on Tuesday. The winner was to play at top-seeded Lake Country Lutheran on Thursday.
Cedar Grove-Belgium beat Kohler, 3-1, on Oct. 10 and earned a No. 9 seed in the Division 3 playoffs. The Rockets were scheduled to play at No. 8-seeded Sevastopol on Tuesday. The winner was to play at No. 1-seeded Manitowoc Lutheran on Thursday.
