Vendors slow to sign up

The Saukville Farmers Market enters its seventh year on June 25, but vendor reservations are slow to come so far this year.
Organizer Michelle Jaeger said on June 1 that only 12 vendors had signed up. Typically, the 18-week event features twice that many, she said.
“We see a few who come back every year, but a few have retired,” Jaeger said. “And each year we get about five or six new ones.”
Debuting in 2010, the first two years saw vendor numbers in the 30s, she said, but numbers have declined. Three years ago, the town cut the registration cost in half, from $100 to $50 for the entire season and $50 to $25 for half.
“Other than paperwork, there’s not much cost to the town other than the police reserves who put up and take down the barricades (along Green Bay Avenue between Highway 33 and Mill Street),” Jaeger said. “It pretty much runs itself.”
There is no limit on space, she said.
“We could probably fit in as many as 50 (vendors),” Jaeger said.
Town of Port Washington resident Karen Welton is among the longtime vendors, selling apples, cider and eggs. She said she’ll be back again this year, but is worried about what she called “a lack of customers.”
“It’s sad, because there are some really nice vendors,” she said. “I’ve been trying to drum up interest, but there doesn’t seem to be much.”
That includes laminating her fliers and posting them around the area.
“I don’t know why the community doesn’t support it,” Welton said. “Other markets are getting people. I tried to ask for a meeting with the town and all the vendors to hash it out, but it’s never happened.”
Each vendor is allocated a 36-by-22-foot space, approximately the size of two car lengths. To register as a vendor, visit the village’s website at
The markets are held Sundays through Oct. 29, excluding Labor Day weekend. The hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the road blocked from 7:30 a.m. until the last vendor  leaves.
