Business group to gain accessibility by moving into Village Hall location

The Saukville Chamber of Commerce gained much-needed visibility several years ago when it moved into a storefront office at the corner of Mill Street and Highway 33.

However, meeting the monthly rent payments has been an ongoing challenge for the business group.

That is likely to change even as the group maintains a strong community presence, now that the Chamber has agreed to rent office space in Village Hall, 639 E. Green Bay Ave.

Last month, the Saukville Village Board approved renting the former police dispatch center at the hall to the Chamber for use as an office. The center is located at the main entry to Village Hall.

All police operations moved to the police station, immediately south of Village Hall, in 2009.

The Chamber’s board of directors endorsed the rental agreement this month. The one-year lease goes into effect on Oct. 1.

Under the agreement, the Chamber will pay the village $600 a year for the space, with payments to be made in semi-annual installments of $300.

Last year, the village approved allocating $2,500 to the Chamber from its room tax fund to help offset the cost of renting office space at its current location.

That money has become less accessible under a revised state statute regulating how room tax funds can be spent. The money is collected from guests who stay at Motel 6, the village’s only hotel. 

The lease allows the Chamber to use the village’s conference room and board room, if there are no conflicts with village needs.

The monthly rent also includes sewer, water, electricity, gas and Internet connection, as well as garbage collection.

The Chamber, however, will be responsible for its own telephone service.

As a condition of the lease, the group must show proof of liability insurance providing at least $1 million in protection.

Any signage will have to be approved by the village, as would be the case no matter where the Chamber’s offices would be.

The business support organization has a part-time executive director and no paid office staff.

Director Mike Cosgrove said the Chamber is excited about the lease arrangement.

“As we partner with (the village) a great deal, it makes sense to be in a central location,” Cosgrove said.
