Judge decides need to protect public warrants a more severe punishment than the one recommended by DA

If there was ever the need to protect the public, an Ozaukee County judge said Tuesday, it’s from a 50-year-old Port Washington man who crushed a cigarette on a police officer’s face and spit in his eyes, then injured another officer in a brawl after they were called to the man’s house by his wife in November.

Judge Joseph Voiland sentenced Lawrence Shelton to five years in prison — more than double the two-year sentence District Attorney Adam Gerol sought —  and three years of extended supervision. He also ordered Shelton to serve 180 days in the county jail for two disorderly conduct-domestic abuse convictions.

While on extended supervision, Shelton must attend annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day observances, Voiland said.

“When law enforcement shows up on scene and there’s an altercation, even if you’re an angry person ... that’s the time to really just stop, take a breath and walk away,” Voiland said. “Mr. Shelton just went, by all accounts, out of control.”
