Port mayor urges council to forge ahead with repairs despite funding shortfall

Port Washington Mayor Tom Mlada on Tuesday urged aldermen to spend as much as $400,000 of city money to repair the breakwater this summer, saying the structure has deteriorated significantly over the winter.

The $1 million repair project can’t wait until next year, Mlada said, showing aldermen photos of the breakwater that revealed sunken areas large enough for him to lay down in and fissures that extended three feet.

“I think the winter really played havoc with the structure,” he said. “It was amazing to me. This is a clear acceleration from where we were last fall. There are numerous areas where, given the condition of the surface, I would deem it impassable. You have to really watch every step.”

Even though grant money will still cover the bulk of the $1 million repair contract with the Army Corps of Engineers, and officials hope to receive more grants to help cover the cost of the work, there will likely still be a shortfall, Mlada said.
