Port High’s acclaimed a cappella group, which debuted a new style this year, will host UW groups, alumni during Jan. 18 community concert

Port Washington High School’s acclaimed a cappella group Limited Edition will kick off a series of performances by hosting a Thursday, Jan. 18, concert that will also feature two University of Wisconsin-Madison a cappella ensembles.
Joining Limited Edition and the school’s extracurricular a cappella group, Focus, on the Port High auditorium stage for the 7 p.m. concert will be Fundamentally Sound, UW’s men’s ensemble, and Pitches and Notes, the university’s women’s group.
BLUE LG  The Final Countdown concert — named by Limited Edition business manager Lyla Waranka because it is on the last day of final exams — will also bring a couple of familiar faces back to the Port High stage. Limited Edition alumni Nick Becker, a member of Fundamentally Sound, and Rachael Billmann, a member of Pitches and Notes, will perform with their groups.
“I’m super excited to be performing again at Port High,” Billmann said. “I think it will be really nostalgic to take the high school stage again.”
Port High Vocal Director Dennis Gephart said, “Bringing these two kids back to the Port High stage will be really special. This is going to be a great show.”
Tickets, which are $3 for students and children and $5 for adults, will be sold at the door.
On Saturday, Jan. 27, Port Washington High School will host the Varsity Vocals International Championship of High School A Cappella quarterfinal competition at 7 p.m.
Limited Edition, a perennial powerhouse in this premiere a cappella competition, has qualified for the championship in New York City six times and won in 2010. It will face seven other groups, including Grafton High School’s Graftonics, in the quarterfinal round.
The two top groups will advance to the semifinals in DeKalb, Ill., on March 10. The finals will be held April 20 at the Lincoln Center in New York City.
“We have a really good group this year,” Gephart said of the 16-member Limited Edition. “We’re a very different group. We’re kind of breaking new ground with our style of music.
“The judges will either love us or hate us, but we’ll definitely be different.”
Tickets for the quarterfinal competition at Port High can be purchased on the Varsity Vocals website, www.varsityvocals.com. They are $15 for students and $20 for general admission.
Limited Edition has also been invited to perform during the Wisconsin State Education Convention in Milwaukee on Friday, Jan. 19, and the American Choral Directors Association Conference in Chicago in February. Limited Edition is one of only three high schools invited to perform at the event, Gephart said.
