New Year’s Day too cold for some, but not for others PDF Print E-mail

With temperatures in the low single digits and the windchill hovering between 15 and 25 below zero, most revelers who would otherwise have taken the plunge in Lake Michigan Monday to celebrate the new year opted not to. Yet, there were still brave souls, including (right photo) Sam Kempf, Abby Loomis and Nathalie McCoy, who wore bikinis, as well as hats, gloves and boots, to toast the new year on Port Washington’s south beach. Dissuaded by the air temperature and ice along the shore, the trio did not take the plunge this year. Nor did Jim and Wendy Peters, who stayed bundled up as they enjoyed a toast on south beach (bottom photo). For the record, the official Port Washington Polar Bear Club plunge in the city’s marina was cancelled because of the cold — a first, organizers say — but that didn’t stop a few people from making a very quick dash into and out of the water (below).     Photo by Sam Arendt
