Officials say village land could ease parking crunch at elementary school

The Grafton School District will send a letter to the village explaining why it is interested in buying tennis courts north of Kennedy Elementary School.Grafton

The district would like to use the courts for parking for parents when they drop off and pick up their children. Given limited street parking near Kennedy, the district needs the additional space.

Staff members park in a lot off Broad Street.

The village wants to work with the school district, Supt. Jeff Nelson told the School Board this week. The village asked the district to send a letter detailing its desire for the property.

Tennis courts in that area are in the village’s master plan, and Nelson said the village may ask the district to pay to put them somewhere else, not necessarily on school property.

If the village has to construct new courts, the cost would be $75,000 per court, Nelson said.

The school district could allow the village use of the eight courts at Grafton High School if it obtains the municipal courts, Nelson said.

Board member Paul Lorge suggested sharing costs with the village to put new courts elsewhere on district property and establishing a maintenance agreement with the village.

Nelson said that’s a possibility, but building the courts on village property as a replacement is a one-time cost compared to ongoing costs if the courts are shared.

“In our discussions, we think it should be a one-time cost,” Nelson said.

If the district’s $39.9 million referendum is approved by voters in April, Kennedy will be expanded to accommodate more students as Grafton Elementary School is closed.

That addition will be done to the south of the school, so it would not impede any work on the tennis courts, Nelson said.

The tennis courts issue is expected to be discussed by the village at its March 29 meeting.
