Grafton public schools ‘exceed expectations’ on DPI report cards PDF Print E-mail

Grafton School District schools have  received high marks on the latest accountability report cards from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

The latest statewide evaluations, which grade districts on how well they prepare students for college and careers, gave each of Grafton’s five public schools numerical marks indicating “exceeds expectations” (73 to 82.9 points) or “significantly exceeds expectations (83 to 100 points) for the 2015-16 year.

Overall, the district received an “exceeds expectations” grade of 80.7.

In a report to the School Board on Monday, Dianna Kresovic, the district’s director of teaching and learning, said Grafton fared well compared to the state average and was above a number of other area districts.

“That’s the positive news,” Kresovic said.

Grafton’s overall score places it at the median among five local districts, ranking above Port Washington-Saukville (79.7) and Northern Ozaukee (77.7) and below Cedarburg (86.8), Mequon-Thiensville (86.5) and Cedar Grove-Belgium (83.1).

Scores were calculated measuring student proficiency in English language arts and mathematics on state assessments; student growth measured by year-to-year improvements; closing gaps in performances between specific student groups, including low-income and disabled students, and their peers; and on-track and postsecondary readiness based on graduation and attendance rates and third and eighth-grade achievements.

The district’s report card placed it above state averages for student achievement (83.9 to 67.5), closing gaps (71.1 to 60.8) and on-track and postsecondary readiness (93.6 to 86.6). However, Grafton’s student-growth score of 63.2 was below the state average of 66.0.

Kresovic said the student-growth mark fell short of the state average due to a deficit in mathematics. Grafton’s 27.3 score in that subject trails the state grade of 33.0.

“We’re refocusing on math,” Kresovic said of the district’s curriculum review.

Among Grafton schools, Woodview Elementary received the district’s only “significantly exceeds” score with 91.4.

Grafton’s four other schools were each graded at “exceeds expectations”: Kennedy Elementary School at 82.4, Grafton Elementary School at 80.6, Grafton High School at 77.5 and John Long Middle School at 77.3.

The district’s efforts to improve student achievement, Kresovic said, will include trying to align curriculum with students in  English language arts and math, upgrading professional development in instruction, and building stronger intervention curriculum to further close gaps.
