Board chooses Mequon official from four finalists for post formerly held by Hofland

The City of Mequon’s loss has become the Village of Grafton’s gain.
The Village Board on Monday announced the hiring of Jesse Thyes as village administrator.Jesse Thyes 4C
Thyes, who has been the assistant city administrator and human resources director in Mequon since 2013, was chosen from four finalists for the Grafton position formerly held by Darrell Hofland.
“I’m excited to be in Grafton,” said Thyes, who was village administrator and clerk in Butler and an assistant village manager in Brown Deer before coming to Mequon.
Citing Grafton’s pro-active approach to development projects, Thyes said he has skills and experience in planning and zoning, as well as personnel management, that will serve the village well.
“Grafton has a lot going for it. I’m really looking forward to being a part of the community,” he said.
During his time in Mequon, Thyes served as acting city administrator/clerk from July 2014 to January 2015. He worked for the Village of Butler from July 2011 to November 2013 after spending more than six years with the Village of Brown Deer.
Before that, Thyes spent four years as a planner and land-use administrator for Dodge County.
A 1999 graduate of Carroll College, he received a master’s degree in public administration from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon in 2008.
Village President Jim Brunnquell said Thyes emerged as the top candidate after the board pared a list of 10 semifinalists in late May.
“We look forward to many, many years of dedicated service to the community,” Brunnquell said of Thyes’ hiring.
Thyes, his wife and their two sons live in Waukesha. Thyes said he plans to begin working full time in Grafton by early July, after giving four-weeks notice to his current employer.
Thyes was chosen over fellow finalists Adam Helms, current director of resident services for the City of Hamilton, Ohio; Tammy LaBorde, former administrator for the City of Pewaukee; and Jeffrey Mikorski, current city manager for Morgantown, W.Va.
The Village Board held a private reception last Friday for the finalists and conducted final interviews Saturday.
The board was scheduled to meet in closed session Monday to consider appointing an administrator and approving a contract. However, Brunnquell announced during the meeting that the decision had already been made.
Thyes’ starting salary will be $105,000.
Hofland resigned in March to accept a job as City of Sheboygan administrator after serving as Grafton’s administrator since 1990. The village subsequently hired Public Administration Associates to recruit, interview and check the backgrounds of applicants in the search for his successor.
