Board trims field of 24 applicants, scheduled to select finalists next week

The Grafton Village Board has narrowed its search for a new village administrator to 10 candidates.

A field of 24 applicants was pared at a special board meeting May 11, during which trustees met in closed session to evaluate potential successors to Darrell Hofland.

Hofland, who had been village administrator since 1990, resigned in March to accept a job as City of Sheboygan administrator.

The village subsequently hired Public Administration Associates, an Oshkosh-based company, to recruit, interview and check the backgrounds of applicants for the position.

The board is scheduled to meet again at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 23, to consider the qualifications of the 10 semifinalists in closed session. Village Clerk Kaity Olson said plans call for the field to be narrowed to four or five finalists, whose names will be made public.

The board will hold a private reception to meet the finalists Friday, June 3. Final interviews are scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 4, after which the board is expected to choose its top candidate.

Public Administration Associates offered a selection deadline of June 27 to fill the position.

“We’re a little ahead of schedule at this point,” Olson said.

In hiring Public Administration Associates, the board cited the company’s work with Wisconsin municipalities. The board also hired the firm in 1990 with the retirement of the village’s first administrator, Emory Sacho.

Hofland was hired as Sacho’s successor. Hofland’s last day with the village was April 22.

The village has also begun the search for a new public works director. Dave Murphy, who held that job and also served as village engineer since 2003, resigned in March to become the deputy director of transportation for Lee County, Fla.

Bob Dreblow is serving as interim public works director.
