Gift from Class of 2016 details the symbolism behind school mascot

Any push to eliminate the Warrior as the Ozaukee High School mascot will face an impressive new obstacle, courtesy of the Class of 2016.Fredonia

A bronze plaque has been installed on the wall adjacent to the high school office, depicting the American Indian mascot and explaining the symbolism behind the warrior’s striking features.

“He wore yellow paint across his face as a symbol of intelligence and honor, showing that he was willing to fight until the very end,” the plaque proclaims.

“Feathers were tied into his hair as a constant reminder of humanity’s connection to nature and respect for surrounding life.”

The sign further explains that the hoop that pierces the warrior’s ear lobe symbolizes “his power and strength through the use of its metal.”

The concluding phrase on the plaque stakes an implicit claim for keeping the mascot — “We honor his strength and courage, taking pride in our history as Ozaukee Warriors.”

Class Salutatorian McKenna Large said the plaque is the product of brainstorming with fellow class officers Michael Richter, Avery Clark and Emily Janke.

“We really wanted to give a gift that the entire community and school, both teachers and students, could appreciate,” Large said.

“After a few ideas were discussed, we decided on the plaque.”

Large said she did research on the area’s history and the Menominee tribe that once inhabited the region.

She then came up with wording which was shared with her classmates and the school administration.

Once it cleared all the hurdles, the plaque design was sent to Custom Craft Trophy in Plymouth to fabricate.
