Port Washington residents are being warned to be on the lookout for scams after a 79-year-old woman is out $2,200 after she fell prey to what authorities term the “grandparents scam” on Monday, Feb. 10.

The woman told police she received a call from someone claiming to be her grandson. He told her he was on a cruise to the Bahamas and had been in an accident, striking a pole and damaging it.

The man said he needed $2,200 to repair the pole before local police would release him from custody, and the woman wired the funds to him.

The woman told police that a short time later, the man called again, this time saying he had injured an Asian woman in the accident and she needed $20,000 to compensate her for her injuries. After negotiations, the consulate told him he only needed to pay $10,000 and he would be allowed back on the cruise ship, he said.

When the woman went to Associated Bank to withdraw the money and wire it, a teller stopped her and told her it was a scam, police said.

When she reported the incident to police, the woman said the man on the phone sounded like her grandson.

On Feb. 11, a resident reported a “secret shopper scam,” police said.

In this scam, a firm “hires” a person as a secret shopper, then sends them a check or money order and asks them to cash it. The secret shopper is to keep a portion of the funds but wire the remainder back to the firm.Daily-Press

When the check bounces, the secret shopper is out the money they wired to the firm.

The potential victim in this case did not wire any money, according to police.

The case points to the need for residents to be vigilant and never to wire money without first checking with police, authorities said.
