The Saukville Community Food Pantry is looking for volunteers to help organize a Lunch in the Park program this summer at Grady Park in Saukville for children who don’t get free lunch at school during the summer.

“We’ll provide the food if we can find volunteers to make the sandwiches, pack them into lunch bags and help hand the food out,” said Mark Gierach, pantry executive director.

It would be the first time the pantry has offered a summer lunch program for school-age children and hopefully won’t be the last, Gierach said.

“We’re looking to do that perhaps once a week this summer to see how it goes and then progress from there in the future,” he added.

Gierach said the program couldn’t happen without help from the Village of Saukville.

“The village has been very helpful in working with us and allowing us to use the park for this purpose along with our mobile pantries we have during the summer,” he said.

Seven mobile pantries are planned in 2020 from April through October, Gierach said.

The mobile food pantries are a program of Feeding America East Wisconsin. They are held at Grady Park, where food is distributed from a semi-trailer.

“If we could find a place to run (the mobile pantries) in the cold months indoors,  we’d be doing November through  March as well,” Gierach said.

“It’s just too cold to do Grady Park during those months.”
