Village awards road project contract

The Belgium Village Board on Monday unanimously awarded a $168,000 contract to Payne & Dolan, Inc,. to resurface Chestnut Street next year.

The project is scheduled to be completed by June 30.

Bids were sought to do the work this fall or next June. Payne & Dolan was the only bidder open to doing the work this year, but it cost $21,000 more.

The other bid was $169,000 from Stark Construction.

“Do you prefer to have it done this fall yet?” Village Board President Pete Anzia asked Public Works Director Dan Birenbaum.

“Not for $20,000,” he said.

The project is in this year’s budget. It could be moved to next year’s budget by allocating for it or earmarking money in the village’s fund balance account, essentially a savings account used for emergencies and unexpected expenses.

Regardless, more money will be required. Only $89,000 was budgeted for the project this year.

A $17,000 grant will help pay for the project, and the rest might come from leftover funds from the Main Street reconstruction project. Treasurer Vickie Boehnlein said she would check the loan to see if money may be spent on other road projects.

The work will be done on Chestnut Street between Main Street and Park Street, about 600 feet.

The board voted, 6-0, to approve the contract. Dan Wolff was absent and excused.
