Success of annual Back 2 School Fair has Food Pantry eager to do more

The Saukville Community Food Pantry’s annual Back 2 School Fair is helping more kids than ever, and organizers of the event plan to expand its impact in the future.

Pantry Director Mark Gierach said this week that the annual drive gave supplies to more than 240 children from throughout Ozaukee County.

In the future, Gierach said, the group hopes to help set up a supply closet at Saukville Elementary School with leftover supplies and to donate items to the Ozaukee County Jail Literacy Program.

The Back 2 School Fair started in 2013 when the Community Food Pantry took it over from the Parkside UCC Church’s Caring Committee.

Partners in this year’s drive included:

• Family Promise of Ozaukee County, which assisted the day of the event by taking registrations.

• Feith Family YMCA, which provided transportation for the Stuff the Bus event held at Walmart on Aug. 17 as well as staff that created all the graphics for ads, social media and website information.

• Walmart, which hosted the Stuff the Bus event and made a financial donation through a grant.

• Port Washington State Bank, which made a financial donation.

• Dollar Tree stores in Port Washington and Grafton, which donated a large number of items.

• St. Vincent De Paul in Port Washington, which promoted the event by handing out vouchers to children for shoes,  clothes and books.

Other participants included Big Brothers/Sisters, and Divorce Care for Kids from First Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cedarburg.

“We could never have done all this on our own. It takes the cooperation of many that work toward one goal to see our young people return to school with all the tools they need to be successful,” Gierach said.
