PWFD drive-by birthday visits are a hit

Hours after fighting a fire Saturday morning, April 11, Port Washington firefighters responded to a call of a different sort С drive-by visits for children who are celebrating birthdays. A father and his children accepted ice cream coupons donated by Culver’s and handed out by firefighter Charlie Leasum (above). The Boldig family -- Michael and Monica and their children Olivia, Jacob and Lucas -- were waiting in their yard as the trucks rolled by (below). Firefighter Adam Lanser said the department borrowed the drive-by idea from similar events in the state, then put the word out on Facebook so families could sign up. Firefighters who have been unable to train or go to traditional meetings jumped at the chance to participate in the event, which was well received. The trucks drove past 28 locations on Saturday, and in the Misty Ridge subdivision firefighters were greeted by hundreds of people who gathered on their lawns. Additional drive-bys are planned for the next two Saturdays.               Photos  by Sam Arendt
