The Port Washington High School girls’ cross country team cracked the top 10 at the 20-team Stevens Point Area High School Invite on Saturday.

The Pirates scored 236 points. The host won with 53.

Bethany Stacey earned a medal by taking 10th and running the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 51 seconds.

Jill Cavanaugh was 39th in 21:52. Mira Stimac was 47th in 22:03. Emma Goodman was 59th in 22:28. Molly Fyhrlund was 92nd in 23:40.

Coach Joe Adamak said the course is narrow and if runners got stuck in the middle, they wouldn’t be able to hit their stride because passing wasn’t possible.

“It’s a good lesson in course management,” he said.

The Port boys took 11th place with 236 points. The host won with 50.

Brett Grisar was 17th in 17:13. Zach Gephart was 27th in 17:43. Ben Pasten was 40th in 18:15. Joe Burke was 71st in 19:12. Michael Wegner was 90th in 19:44.

The Pirates next run Saturday at a Racine St. Catherine’s invite at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
