LETTER: Why is no one sounding alarm over trillion-dollar U.S. deficit?

To Ozaukee Press:

The U.S. Treasury Department is working hard to pay bills for the federal government. For many years, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, preached on a daily basis about the dangers of a growing budget deficit. This was at a time when Republicans controlled both houses.

It was during this time that American taxpayers received a $1.5 trillion tax cut.  This was designed to stimulate the economy and increase revenue, but the spending and borrowing increased at alarming levels. In the last year, the budget deficit increased by 27%, and will exceed $1 trillion later this year.

Both political parties seem to be mute on this subject. Are we speeding to the edge of the cliff? Fiscal responsibility is the duty of our federal government. It’s time they practice it.
