LETTER: The great pumpkin rescue

Heavy rain last week caused the Milwaukee River to spill over into a drainage ditch and flood part of Ann and Peter Schmidt’s half-acre garden off Highway W in the Town of Saukville.

Bushels of vegetables were in peril, but quick thinking by the couple’s daughter, Erica Bastianello of Cedarburg (inset), who blew up her children’s inflatable sled and floated the produce to safety, saved the day, not to mention the pumpkins and squash.

Ann reports that the garden produces so much food that they donate much of it to food pantries and food kitchens.
