Heidi Sprang

Heidi Sprang of Belgium had a passion for helping animals, which led her family to raise rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chickens and a chinchilla.

“Her ultimate dream was to move south to Florida where she wanted to be a zookeeper at Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” her husband Jason said.  “She was a gentle spirit who accepted people for who they were.”

Mrs. Sprang died of complications of cancer Thursday, Aug. 15, at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton.  She was 39.

Mrs. Sprang was born in Port Washington on Feb. 16, 1980, to Robert and Mari Ann Vani Larsen. In 1998, she graduated from Port Washington High School.

On May 16, 2007, she married Jason Sprang in the Cayman Islands. The couple settled in Belgium to raise their family.

Mrs. Sprang earned an associate’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Washington County and furthered her education by attending Animal Behavior College in California.

She worked as an animal behaviorist and adoption counselor for the Wisconsin Humane Society. She also worked at Dawgs in Motion in Saukville as a part-time dog trainer.

She was a member of Christian Life Church in Belgium.

In 2017, Mrs. Sprang was diagnosed with pleomorphic lipsarcoma, a connective tissue cancer. Only 500 to 1,000 people in the country are diagnosed with the disease each year.

As her medical bills piled up, Divine Savior Catholic School in Fredonia, where her children attend classes, came to the family’s aid by collecting gift cards and making approximately 160 memory bears for Mrs. Sprang to sell.

“That’s really amazing, when you see the kindness come out in people,” she said in an Ozaukee Press story in 2017. “People we hardly knew were supportive.”

Mrs. Sprang is survived by her husband Jason of Belgium and children Sean DuBord of Grafton and Ahnaleigh and Natalie Sprang of Belgium.

She is further survived by her parents Bob and Mari Ann Larsen of the Town of Saukville and siblings Dawn Coleman of Cedarburg, Keith (Jane) Larsen of Mequon, Kristen Larsen of Cedarburg and Erik (Patty) Larsen of Denver, Colo.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Christian Life Church in Belgium. The Rev. Steve Harris will officiate.

Visitation will be at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service.

Memorials to the family are suggested.

Eernisse Funeral Home, Belgium, is handling the arrangements.
