George A. Flierl

George A. Flierl stood out in a crowd in Port Washington.

“There aren’t too many people who are 6-foot-6 and weigh 170 pounds,” his son Terry LaPalme said.

Mr. Flierl was born on Oct. 11, 1933,  to George and Louise Flierl in Port Washington. He died on July 22.

Known as Uncle Junior to his nephews and nieces, Flierl’s hobbies included horses and woodworking. He raised appaloosas, Arabians and other breeds on ranches owned by friends around Port Washington and had horses in the very first Fish Day parade, his son said.

“Everybody called him Tex because he was a true cowboy,” he said.

His woodworking projects included cabintets, bookcases and lawn ornaments, many of which he gave to friends and family.

He worked at Modern Equipment Co. for 34 years, holding a number of jobs such as truck driver, painter and sand blaster, his son said. Mr. Flierl retired in 1998.

He married Janice Witte of Port Washington in 1982 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tomahawk. She died in 2015.

He belonged to Port Washington’s Van Ells Schanen American Legion Post 82 and was an honorary member of the Port Washington Leatherneck Club.

“He served in the Navy, but the Leathernecks made him an honorary member bedause he was always helping them out,” his son said.

He is survived by his brother Donald (Judy) Flierl of Port Washington, his sister Betty (Fred) Bley of Port Washington; children Keith (Karrie) LaPalme of Sheboygan, Kirt LaPalme of Friendship and Terry LaPalme of Port Washington; granddaughters Kayla LaPalme and Brittney LaPalme.

A funeral service was to be held Wednesday, July 25, at Eernisse Funeral Home in Port Washington with the Rev. Andrew Suhr presiding.
