Organizers of the National Flag Day festivities said this week that there will not be an organized program this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“While this was an extremely difficult decision, it is the right decision and sometimes doing what is right is not easy,” the National Flag Day Foundation board of directors stated in an announcement.

The Flag Day celebration, which had been scheduled this year for June 14, traditionally includes a parade, family day, essay contest and other activities at the Americanism Center in Waubeka.

The board’s announcement said the foundation will observe Flag Day by presenting an online program “honoring all active military, veterans, and the American Flag to be streamed on its website and on social media.

“While the formal National Flag Day Foundation observance will not be taking place, we encourage you to observe what the flag means to you on her birthday,” the board’s announcement read.

This year’s observance would have been the first since the death last October of Jack Janik, who is credited with reviving the event when he became the board’s president in the 1990s.

Board members said the celebration will return in 2021 when they plan to pay tribute to Honor Flight volunteers.
