Port psychic provides insight, entertainment by reading auras and chakras
The Halloween season is a busy time for Judy Rich, a spiritual reader and psychic in Port Washington.
She’s invited to numerous Halloween parties, restaurants and establishments, where she reads palms and tarot cards, gives psychic readings and discusses people’s auras and chakras.
“Halloween is kind of fun,” Rich said. “I’ll play the part and dress up as a gypsy fortune teller, but I’m not a fortune teller. I don’t tell you what will happen. I can only tell people what I see.”
At parties, people mostly want their palms read, she said.
“Palm reading is personality traits, your lifeline. It’s all about yourself because it’s your hand,” Rich said.
“A lot of people want their palms read because it’s not threatening and you get to know things about yourself. I don’t like to give bad news. I don’t predict death. That’s between them and God or whatever they believe in.”
Rich said she can tell if a person someone is dating is good or bad for them by looking at a picture of the individual.
“I get an aura from the picture and can tell you what I see — that he (or she) may be dishonest and possibly cheat on you or is kind and loves you,” she said. “It’s up to the people what they do with the information. We have control over our own feelings.”
At parties and elsewhere, she encounters plenty of skeptics. She doesn’t mind unless they get obnoxious.
“I’m used to it,” she said. “It’s OK if they don’t believe in it, but I’ve had people send me nasty things in the mail.Sometimes I convince people and they come back.”
Rich does psychic readings by looking into people’s eyes, not into a crystal ball. She picks up on names and things, including health issues.
“A lot of times I pick up on things, but I don’t know if it’s from now or in the future,” she said.
“I told a woman I was picking up the name Mark, but she said she didn’t know anybody with that name. She moved to Chicago. When she came back to Port for a visit, she stopped in to tell me she met a man named Mark and moved in with him.”
Similarly, when she senses a baby while doing a reading, a woman may or may not be pregnant at the time, but usually becomes pregnant, Rich said.
“They often come back later to show me their babies,” she said.
Her psychic gifts, she said, were inherited from her mother and grandmother.
“My sisters are also psychic, but they don’t do anything with it,” she said. “I used to go to fairs with my mother and grandmother, and they had a shop in Indiana.
“I wanted to do more with it and got very interested in the energies around us and the more spiritual side of it.”
Rich can’t remember when she first recognized her gift. It’s just a part of her, she said.
“It’s more an intuition, knowing when the phone is going to ring, sensing something good or bad will happen,” she said.
Rich went to school to learn more about auras and chakras, the seven energy points in people’s bodies.
“Auras and chakras tell you a lot about yourself and your energy,” she said. “Most of the people here in Port are not so much into the psychic aspect. They want to get spiritually balanced and have more energy.”
Her warnings are not always heeded.
She recently advised a friend to wait 10 minutes before leaving for work, sensing something bad would happen.
He ignored the advice and got into an accident a few blocks from his house.
“I didn’t know he would get into an accident, but I knew it would be best to wait,” Rich said.
“They say everybody has a sixth sense. Everybody can pick up on people’s vibes. When you meet someone, you get good or bad feeling about them. That’s their positive or negative energy. Children, babies and animals are very intuitive about people.”
While most people sense the vibes, Rich said, she sees the colors of an aura that surrounds a person.
“Energy forms colors around you and those colors tell a lot about you and are good colors for you to wear,” she said.
When people’s energies are too negative, she helps them become more balanced through the use of meditation, candles, incense and crystals.
“So many people walk around who are negative,” she said. “Bad things happen, but you have to deal with them and let them go, allow yourself to be positive again. I’m a big believer in positive thinking and mind over matter.”
Although Rich said she can pick up energy from people who have passed on, she said other psychics have greater gifts for communicating with the dead.
She said she has helped people who believe their homes or businesses are haunted and convinced the spirits to move on.
Rich moved her business from Grand Avenue to 317 N. Franklin St.
