Things to do

Membership drive for the Grafton Junior and Senior Women’s Club will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, in the Zaun Pavilion in Lime Kiln Park. Club meets the second Thursday of each month in the pavilion. Dues are $20 annually. For reservations or information, call 375-6295.

9/11 commemoration will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11. A silent march from the fire station to Grady Park will open the event, which includes a candlelight memorial service at the park.

Celebrate Fredonia will be held beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, and 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, in Fredonia. There will be a pig roast, music and a martial arts demonstration Friday, and a noon parade, music, kickball tournament. games, karaoke and fireworks on Saturday.

Rocket Bike Ride and related activities will be held in Belgium Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11 and 12. There will be a spaghetti dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Alliance Community Bible Church. Three bike rides will be held Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. at the church and ending in Community Park. Second annual Light the Lamp Against Leukemia charity hockey tournament will be held at the Ozaukee Ice Center from Friday through Sunday, Sept. 11 to 13. Six coed teams will participate and there will be two women’s exhibition games. Games are at 6:30 and 7:45 p.m. Friday, 1, 2:15, 3:30, 4:45, 6 and 7:15 p.m. Saturday and the championship rounds at 9:15, 10:30 and 11:45 a.m. Sunday. Family Fun Day in Grady Park, Saukville, will be held Saturday, Sept. 12. Games, music, food and a potato salad recipe contest will be part of the fun.

Grafton Grand Night Out will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Milwaukee Ale House, 1208 13th Ave., Grafton. Beer and wine tasting, hours d-oeuvres, chocolate fountain, raffles, music and other attractions are part of the event. Tickets are available in Grafton at Port Washington State, Harris and Cornerstone Community banks, the Bloomin Olive, Heart of Grafton Family Restaurant, Milwaukee Ale house, Vino 100 and the Grafton Chamber of Commerce.

Saukville Fire Department car show will be held throughout the day on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Grady Park.

St. Paul Lutheran Church picnic will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, on the church grounds, 701 Washington St., Grafton. Food, games and music will be part of the event.

“Taking Care of You, Powerful Tools for the Caregiver,” a course for people providing care for others, will be held from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 16 to Oct. 28 at Willowbrook Place in Thiensville. Registration is encouraged by Sept. 10. High holy day services at Congregation Beth El, 1007 North Ave., Sheboygan, have been scheduled. “The Great Kapok Tree”
by Lynne Cherry will be the theme for the children’s story time from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. Listent to the story, create exotic animals and insects and learn about their habitat. Fee is $5 for adults and $3 for children, with a $1 discount for members.

Riveredge Speaks Out, a monthly lecture series covering topics that include natural history, science, public policy and the environment, is at 7 p.m. at the Cedarburg Cultural Center, W62 N546 Washington Ave., or the Washington County Public Agency Center, 333 E. Washington St., West Bend. Jim Reinartz, director of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Field Station, will discuss presettlement vegetation of Wisconsin on Sept. 15. Programs are free, but a $5 donation is suggested.

Trip to Madison Farmers Market and Lapham Peak State Park will be held by the Food for Thought group at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Carpool to visit the market, buy fresh produce and then picnicand hike at the park. Fee is $10 and covers the cost of a picnic lunch.

“Mad City Chickens,” a film from Madison aiming to education urban residents of the benefit of raising their own food and misconceptions people have about raising poultry, will be shown as part of the Films That Matter Series from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. Admission is free, but a $5 donation is suggested.

Great Outdoors Weekend will run from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20. Events include a treasure hunt, visit and harvest in the organic garden, geocaching presentation and event, self-guided adventure hikes, climbing trees and more.


Luxembourg American Cultural Center

The Luxembourg American Cultural Center at 100 Peter Thein Ave., Belgium, includes the J.B. Krier Wellkomm Centre, the Roots and Leaves Museum and the LACS Research Center. The research center has an extensive collection of archival resources pertaining to genealogy and history for Luxembourg American families and communities throughout the United States and for families and communities in northern Ozaukee County, no matter the nationality.

The center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays adn Fridays, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Admission to the center is $9 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. Members of the Luxembourg American Cultural Society and Port Washington Historical Society will be admitted free.

Interfaith Caregivers

To volunteer, or if you are in need of help, call Interfaith Caregivers at 284-7130 or 376-5362. A coalition of churches in Ozaukee County, Interfaith Caregivers provides services for elderly, frail, homebound and physically challenged residents. Services include transportation to appointments, friendly visits, shopping, housekeeping, yard work, information and referrals.

Transportation

Ozaukee County Express provides daily bus service between Ozaukee County and the City of Milwaukee. For schedules and other information, call 284-8108.

Ozaukee County Taxi operated from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 8 a.m. to noon Sundays. Call 284-8294 for information.

TransPort Shared Ride Taxi operates in the City of Port Washington and within two miles of its borders. Services may be used in conjunction with the Ozaukee County Taxi. For information, call 284-0090.



The Food Pantry

The Food Pantry is open from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays in the basement of the rectory at St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church, 1800 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington. Use the back entrance.


Health

Ozaukee County immunization clinics provides vaccinations against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, rubella, mumps, polio, haemophilus, chickenpox and hepatitis B. Tuberculosis skin tests and the chickenpox vaccine are available at all sites except Mequon. The hepatitis B vaccine is given in three doses over the six-month period. The first two shots are given a month apart and the last one five months after the second shot.

There is a $7 charge for all children’s vaccines and tests, based on the ability to pay. The fee for adult vaccines varies, depending on the shot. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone younger than 18. Sponsored by the Ozaukee County Public Health Department.

Vaccines are by appointment only at the Ozaukee County Administration Center, 121 W. Main St., Port Washington; and the Mequon Safety Building, 11300 N. Buntrock Ave.

Blood pressure screenings are offered by the county public health department from noon to 2 p.m. the first Friday of each month at U.S. Bank, N61 W6312 Turner St., Cedarburg; and from 12:30 to 3 p.m. the fourth Wednesdays of the month at Walgreens Drug Store in Thiensville.

Blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol screenings are offered by the county public health department by appointment from 2 to 4:30 p.m. the last Monday of each month. There is no cost for the blood pressure screening. The cholesterol and diabetes test is $25. For information, call 284-8170 or 238-8170.

Wisconsin Cancer Care Line at 1-800-622-8922 is staffed by counselors from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays to provide accurate, confidential information about cancer. At other times, leave a name and telephone number and the call will be returned. Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and Clinical Cancer Center.

Cancer Society Loan Closet lends equipment for cancer patients, including wigs, disposable and hospital-type equipment. Contact the Harbor Club, 425 Walters St., Port Washington, at 268-1800.

Women, Infants and Children Nutrition program holds weekly clinics at the Ozaukee County Administration Center, 121 W. Main St., Port Washington. Program is open to families who meet income and health guidelines. Anyone on medical assistance or Healthy Start is eligible. For information, call 284-8172 or 238-8172.

Lead screenings available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays for children six months to 5 years at the Ozaukee County Administration Center, 121 W. Main St., Port Washington. Appointments are not necessary, but are helpful. Call 284-8170 or 238-8170.

Venous edema and lymphedema screenings for swelling in the arms, legs or chest will be done at Cedar Haven Rehabilitation Agency in Grafton. Free screening done by physical or occupations therapist certified in lymphedema treatment. Call 375-4877 for information.

Flu shot clinics

Seasonal flu shot clinics will be held by the Ozaukee County Public Health Department. The cost is $28 for the flu vaccine and $40 for a pneumonia shot. The shots do not protect against the H1N1, or swine flu, virus.

Medicare Part B will cover the cost of the shots. Participants should bring their Medicare cards.

Immunizations against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis will also be available for $7.

Harrington Beach State Park

The park on Highway D east of I-43 in the Town of Belgium is open daily. Admission is a Wisconsin State Park sticker. Daily stickers are $7 for Wisconsin residents and $10 for nonresidents. An annual sticker is available to $25 for Wisconsin-licensed vehicles and $35 for out-of-state vehicles. An annual senior resident pass is $10. Park users with more than one vehicle may purchase additional stickers for half price. Admission stickers are available at the park. Port Light Station

This 1860-building at 311 Johnson St., Port Washington, originally served as a lighthouse and is now restored. A former generator room on the site is a museum that features a changing display of historic Port Washington artifacts.

The Light Station, which is maintained by the Port Washington Historical Society, is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays, or by appointment. Group appointments are available by appointment. The Light Station closes for the season in October.

Eghart House

The restored Victorian house at 302 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington, is furnished with items from the Judge Eghart family and donations from Port Washington families who lived in the city at the turn of the century. Guides are available.

Pioneer Village

Ozaukee County museum has 24 buildings and display areas, as well as a gift shop, that date from 1840 to 1910. It is open from noon to 5 p.m. weekends from Memorial Day weekend through the second week in October. Costumed guides assist visitors. Craft demonstrations are held Sundays.

Admission is usually $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, $2 for children ages 5 to 11 and free for children younger than 5.
