Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly to capitalize on space in former Pick ‘n Save space

The transition that will change the Pick ‘n Save grocery store in Saukville into a Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly is under way.

Piggly Wiggly, which currently operates a grocery store across the street at 835 E. Green Bay Ave., took possession of the Pick ‘n Save store last Wednesday.

Since then, the store has been undergoing a frenzy of activity.

“Our plan is still to close our current Piggly Wiggly store at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, and reopen in the new building at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19,” said Pat Fox, president of Fox Bros.

In making the move, Piggly Wiggly will be gaining a newer building and significantly more space. The current store has about 40,000 square feet and the new location will offer nearly 50,000 square feet.

“That space will allow us to expand our meat and produce departments, including allowing a lot more room for our organic offerings,” Fox said.

“It really is exciting for all of us. The move will give us and our customers a lot nicer setting to shop in.”

The new store will also offer a more extensive selection of wine and beer, he said.

Pick ‘n Save customers will notice one thing missing — the self-check registers.

“We are big believers in the importance of people-to-people contact,” Fox said.

The new store will have about 90 employees, including all of the current Piggly Wiggly staff and about 20 people who had been working at Pick ‘n Save.

“The hiring has gone pretty well, although we could probably use a few more people,” Fox said.

The large brick building currently has no brand sign, but the Village of Saukville Plan Commission approved a new signage plan last week.

Fox said some of the signs will be in place in time for next week’s opening, with more to come later.

He said store officials anticipate no glitches in the transition to the new space.

“The expectation is it will be business as usual for now, but we are planning some kind of grand opening celebration early next year,” Fox said.
