Two candidates willing to serve emerge to fill vacancy

After a cordial discussion among two candidates and the Belgium Village Board, a new trustee was appointed Monday night.

Rose Sauers was selected to join the board on a 6-0 vote.

Sauers has lived in the village since 2005 and has no political experience. She works in an advising program that provides at-risk students with college skills at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The other candidate who submitted a letter of interest, Jane Hasenberg, has lived in the village since 2010. She has been a senior paralegal and legal researcher for Wausau Insurance Companies for 24 years and taught an American government class at Northcentral Technical College.

She worked as a senior corporate paralegal for Johnson Controls for four years and taught fourth grade at the Business and Economics Academy in Milwaukee for two years. She is now retired.

Both candidates expressed interest in serving their community.

“I don’t like to be a bystander. I like to be involved,” Hasenberg said.

“I also feel it’s kind of my duty as a citizen of the village to serve,” Sauers said.

Hasenberg said as long as someone else had sought interest, she was OK with not being selected.

Village President Vickie Boehnlein said she would take Hasenberg at her word and moved to appoint Sauers.

“I think you both sound like you’re more than qualified to do it,” Boehnlein said.

The board came to a consensus to appoint someone to the position and not hold a special election.

“Regardless, this seat is open for re-election in April,” Boehnlein said.

Sauers will fill the spot left by Andrew Ohlson, who resigned in June since he was moving to the Oconomowoc area to be closer to extended family.

The Village Board had hoped to appoint someone by August, but no residents sought the trustee spot.

Then, two candidates emerged. The board is now back at full strength.
